The issue of affordable housing has been of concern in the Cowichan region for the past decade or more. Extensive discussions on the issue have been held over several years with the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). This has culminated in a proposed bylaw to provide funding to Cowichan Housing Association (CHA) to securing affordable housing opportunities for the Valley.
Recently announced dollars for federal and provincial housing programs can be accessed but projects that can show strong support by local governments have a much higher chance of approval. Adoption by the CVRD of the bylaw, demonstrating local commitment and funding, will enable us to all be more effective in meeting the growing housing need locally.
CHA has participated in the development of a coalition of agencies, all of whom see the need for housing as a critical step in addressing the health and safety of residents in the Valley. Collectively, we believe more proactive steps need to be taken to ensure the necessary housing is developed in the region. There is proven evidence that by enabling people to get into housing reduces daily stress on those who struggle to find safe, affordable shelter. This, in turn reduces overall cost to government in multiple areas including, health care, education, and policing.
